Gaon Cable said Wednesday it has supplied hundreds of billions of won worth of power distribution cables to SK Hynix's semiconductor cluster in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, expanding its deliveries beyond the chipmaker's existing factories in Icheon and Cheongju.

Power distribution cables are a key electrical component that supplies electricity to production lines and process equipment. Because semiconductor factories operate around the clock at massive power loads, demand for distribution cables arises not only during new fab construction but also when existing production facilities are scaled up.

Gaon Cable is in talks with the customer to supply additional cables worth hundreds of billions of won. The company is also pursuing participation in a power infrastructure project for a semiconductor production facility being developed by a US company.

"A semiconductor production facility is one giant power infrastructure site," said Jung Hyun, chief executive of Gaon Cable. "Drawing on the supply experience and technological capabilities we have built up domestically, we will expand our business into the global semiconductor power infrastructure market, including the United States."

Meanwhile, Gaon Cable has been securing a string of orders on the back of growing power infrastructure demand. Last month, the company signed a contract to supply hundreds of billions of won worth of underground transmission cables for a large-scale data center project in Gyeonggi Province.
