About 30 attend winter concrete seminar, including South Chungcheong officials

Product achieves 5 MPa compressive strength within 36 hours, promising shorter build times

Holds Ministry of Land Construction New Technology No. 995 and green technology certification

Sampyo Industries will use its cold-weather concrete product, Blue-Con Winter, in the construction of the South Chungcheong Arts Center, a project set to break ground later this year. The product is designed to cure even at temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius.

The company said Tuesday it held a Blue-Con Winter technology seminar in South Chungcheong Province on Wednesday to discuss the product's application to the arts center project. About 30 people attended, including civil servants from the South Chungcheong provincial government and construction site officials.

The move was initiated by construction management firm Gunwon Engineering, which proposed adopting cold-resistant concrete as part of a value engineering review aimed at improving cost efficiency and construction quality.

Sampyo Industries signed an MOU with Gunwon Architecture and Gunwon Engineering in June last year to expand the use of cold-resistant concrete. The two sides have continued technical cooperation to prevent concrete freeze damage in winter and to improve construction quality and worker safety.

Blue-Con Winter is a winter-specific concrete developed to achieve a compressive strength of 5 megapascals within 36 hours of pouring — without additional curing measures — even at minus 20 degrees Celsius.

In typical winter construction, moisture inside concrete can freeze before sufficient strength develops, causing cracks and requiring additional curing work such as heating and insulation. Blue-Con Winter shortens the time needed to reach initial strength, reducing the risk of construction delays and quality problems in cold weather.

The product became the first in South Korea to receive Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Construction New Technology designation No. 995, in July 2024, and has since obtained green technology certification.

Sampyo Industries said the product reduces the use of lignite briquettes and fuel oil typically burned for curing work, lowering carbon emissions and cutting the risk of worker asphyxiation in enclosed spaces on construction sites.

"Safety management and quality assurance at winter construction sites are important priorities for local governments as well," a South Chungcheong provincial official said. "We hope this will be an opportunity to raise safety and quality standards at construction sites across the province, including the South Chungcheong Arts Center."

A Sampyo Industries official said the company would "continue to advance specialized concrete technologies capable of responding to climate change and winter cold snaps."
