Hanwha Solutions' Qcells division announced Tuesday that it is hosting the "Space Solar Innovation Workshop 2026" over two days beginning Monday at its Seoul headquarters and its factory in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province.
The workshop was organized to bring together global space solar experts, share technology leadership and discuss avenues for cooperation. During the event, participants will attend a space solar technology seminar and a next-generation solar technology observation program, and share their vision for building a space energy ecosystem.
Attendees include space solar and future energy solution specialists from around the world. Hanwha Qcells Chief Technology Officer Daniel Murffeld will chair the workshop, which brings together about 40 researchers, engineers and industry representatives in space solar from the United States, Europe and South Korea.
Hanwha Qcells plans to use the workshop as a foundation for building strategic partnerships. The company will open its perovskite-silicon tandem pilot line — established at the Jincheon factory — to participants, exploring ways to extend Hanwha Qcells' solar technology leadership into space alongside global experts.
Dr. Jud Ready of the Georgia Institute of Technology's space research institute called the event "a valuable gathering where prominent experts from academia, government and industry can come together to discuss space solar-based collaboration and opportunities," adding that he was "impressed to see firsthand the expertise and capabilities Hanwha Qcells possesses" and that he looked forward to the company's next steps.
CTO Murffeld said the workshop marks a starting point from which Hanwha Qcells expects to broaden its connections with global leaders in industry, government and academia who are pursuing the new frontier of space solar power, and to build toward substantive collaboration.
Meanwhile, Hanwha Qcells last month established a dedicated Space Solar Development Team under its technology division, marking its full-scale entry into the space solar business. The team will focus on researching and developing solar cells for space applications using the company's tandem cell technology. Last month, Hanwha Qcells also took part in a space solar demonstration project to send tandem cells to the moon.
