The Ulsan City Agricultural Technology Center has selected eight members of a local lifestyle improvement association as heat illness prevention volunteers to conduct outreach targeting elderly residents and farmers vulnerable to extreme heat through Sept. 23.

The volunteers will visit senior centers and community halls to share basic heat illness prevention guidelines, including drinking water regularly, taking adequate rest, wearing hats and well-ventilated work clothes, and carrying a mobile phone with emergency contacts. They will also urge residents to avoid outdoor farm work during the hottest part of the day, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The volunteers will also provide guidance on preventing tick-borne infectious diseases common during outdoor summer activities and distribute promotional items on site, including arm sleeves and tick repellent.

"Extreme heat can be fatal for farmers and the elderly, which is why we are bringing heat illness prevention activities directly to them," an official at the center said. "When a heat wave advisory is issued, please follow heat illness prevention guidelines, including adjusting your working hours."
