Meta plans to build a large-scale AI data center in Canada, committing 13 billion Canadian dollars (about 13.8 trillion won) to the project.

The company announced Wednesday that it will construct a 1-gigawatt AI data center in Sturgeon County, Alberta.

The facility will be Meta's 33rd data center and is designed to handle AI training and inference workloads.

Meta said roughly 3,000 construction workers will be on site during peak building activity, and more than 300 permanent jobs will be created once the facility is operational.

The company also plans to invest an additional 60 million Canadian dollars to expand local infrastructure, including roads and water systems.

The investment extends the AI infrastructure expansion strategy outlined by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who previously announced plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure in the United States before 2030.

Through the new data center, Meta aims to strengthen the computing capacity needed to expand its AI services while broadening its data center footprint across North America.
