Jungnang-gu held the "82nd Memorial Ceremony for Han Yong-un and Academic Conference Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Publication of 'Nim's Silence'" at the Jungnang Mangwoo Space in Mangunyeok History and Culture Park on June 29.
The event was organized to honor the spirit of Han Yong-un — independence activist, Buddhist monk and poet — and to reflect on the intellectual legacy he left behind.
About 200 residents and Buddhist practitioners attended the memorial ceremony to pay tribute to Han's life and ideals. The event also featured a three-cheers salute and a Taegeukgi flag performance in honor of Han, who died just one year before Korea's liberation.
The academic conference that followed centered on the theme "Han Yong-un and Modernization," with presentations and discussions examining his philosophy, literature and spirit of independence from multiple perspectives. The gathering offered an opportunity to reexamine the contemporary relevance of Han's legacy.
A special exhibition, "Temperature of Love: A Great Legacy Recorded Through Love," is also running at the Jungnang Mangwoo Space. Organized to mark the 100th anniversary of "Nim's Silence," the 110th birth anniversary and 70th death anniversary of Lee Jung-seop, and the 100th birth anniversary and 70th death anniversary of Park In-hwan, the exhibition draws on archival materials from major cultural institutions — including the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History and the Art Research Center of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art — to introduce the lives and work of the three figures.
Jungnang-gu plans to continue operating exhibitions and educational programs tied to the historical figures interred at Mangunyeok History and Culture Park. The district aims to further enhance the park's historical and cultural value — it has drawn a cumulative 2.58 million visitors — and develop it into a landmark destination representing Korea's history and culture.
"The spirit of Han Yong-un and other great figures of the past continues to resonate deeply in our society today," said Jungnang-gu District Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi. "We will continue to expand high-quality exhibitions and educational content drawing on the historical and cultural resources of Mangunyeok History and Culture Park, and develop it into a history and culture park that represents the Republic of Korea."
