The National Tax Service has launched an unscheduled special tax audit of KT Corp, sources said.

The Seoul Regional Tax Office sent investigators to KT Corp's Gwanghwamun office in Jongno-gu on Tuesday to secure documents needed for the probe, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Tax authorities requested financial and accounting records covering 2021 through 2025 — a period spanning the tenures of former chief executives Koo Hyun-mo and Kim Young-sup.

The audit is the first of its kind in about four years, following a previous investigation in July 2022.

Industry observers interpret the probe as an effort to examine financial flows and accounting practices during the previous management's tenure. However, the specific grounds for the audit have not been confirmed.

The National Tax Service declined to comment, saying it "cannot confirm information such as tax audits of individual taxpayers."

KT Corp also said it "cannot confirm anything regarding the matter."
