Gyeongju city in North Gyeongsang Province will open four local beaches — Oryu, Najeong, Bonggil and Gwanseong — for the summer holiday season from Friday through Aug. 17, a total of 39 days, the city announced Tuesday.

The beaches will operate from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with swimming prohibited after 7 p.m. to prevent accidents. Jeoncheol Beach, however, will not open this year.

The city said it has completed safety preparations and facility maintenance so beachgoers can enjoy the water with peace of mind.

Each beach will have its own operations center, and the city has installed safety buoys, nets to block harmful marine organisms and life-saving equipment. Restrooms, shower facilities and other amenities have been fully inspected, and life jacket rental containers have also been set up.

Safety personnel to be deployed at each site include four water safety managers, 37 lifeguards, four emergency medical responders and four beach patrol officers.

Ahead of the opening, the city conducted joint rescue training with the Korea Maritime Rescue Association to strengthen on-site emergency response.

"We will operate the beaches with safety management as our top priority so that both residents and tourists can enjoy the summer with confidence," Gyeongju Mayor Ju Nak-young said. "We will do our best to provide a pleasant environment and convenient facilities, making Gyeongju a marine tourism city that people want to visit again."
