A man in his 50s has been arrested after deliberately throwing himself in front of a reversing car in an attempt to collect insurance money.

The Guri Police Station in Gyeonggi Province referred the man, identified only as A, to prosecutors Tuesday on charges of violating the Special Act on Prevention of Insurance Fraud, without seeking his detention.

A is accused of approaching a reversing Kia Morning on a road in Guri around 11 a.m. on April 26 and intentionally making contact with the vehicle to fraudulently claim insurance money.

A review of nearby CCTV footage revealed that A, who was intoxicated, had been wandering the area for about 10 minutes before the incident. He had also attempted to stage collisions with passing vehicles at a nearby crosswalk.

A told police he could not remember what happened because he had been drunk, but admitted to the act after investigators showed him CCTV footage from the scene.
