HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is running its "HD Harmony Day" program through the end of this month across all its worksites — including its Ulsan headquarters and the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center — to stimulate local spending and boost sales for small businesses in the city.

Under the program, the company provides each employee with 30,000 won ($20) to spend on team-building activities such as meals, board games and sports. If all employees, including those at in-house partner firms, participate, the initiative is expected to generate around 1.3 billion won in local spending.

As it did last year, the company is channeling gains from improved earnings — driven by the shipbuilding market recovery — back into the community.

Starting this year, HD Hyundai Heavy expanded the eligible area for HD Harmony Day from Dong-gu, where its facilities are located, to all of Ulsan, with the aim of revitalizing a broader range of local commercial districts.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is also distributing "Welcome Pay" — in the form of Ulsan Pay, the city's local currency — to foreign workers to help them settle into the community, encouraging them to sign up for the local currency system from the start of their time in Korea.

Through its joint labor welfare fund and other resources, the company plans to provide each foreign worker with 53,500 won in Ulsan Pay, generating up to 6.25 billion won in local spending.
