A magnitude 2.1 earthquake struck 13 kilometers northeast of Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, at 8:57:24 p.m. Monday.

The Korea Meteorological Administration placed the epicenter at 36.23 degrees north latitude and 128.20 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 9 kilometers.

The quake registered a maximum instrumental intensity of III in North Gyeongsang Province. An intensity of III means shaking is felt noticeably by people indoors — particularly on upper floors — and stationary vehicles rock slightly. A maximum intensity of II was also observed in neighboring North Chungcheong Province, a level perceptible only to a small number of people at rest or on upper floors of buildings.

A Korea Meteorological Administration official said residents near the epicenter may feel the tremors and urged them to stay alert. No significant damage is expected, but the official asked the public to familiarize themselves with emergency safety guidelines.
