The University of Science and Technology (UST) held the advanced biotech session of its UST Global Alpha Class, a world-class education program featuring lectures delivered directly by leading global scholars.
The three scholars who led the session were Raju Kucherlapati, a distinguished professor at Harvard Medical School; Palani Palaniappan, a key researcher in the Human Genome Project and founder and CEO of advanced biotech startup Aridika; and Brian Pollock, board chair of biotech innovation platform company Invivo Biosystems.
The three divided their subject areas and delivered an omnibus-style series of one-hour lectures each day over five days, for a total of three hours of instruction per day. The scholars walked students through the entire arc of biotech innovation — from foundational scientific discovery through drug development to global commercialization — sharing research insights alongside concrete case studies. They also gave candid accounts of crises encountered along the way, both research-related and otherwise, and how those challenges were overcome. Topics ranged widely and in depth, covering potential pitfalls and cautions in biotech startups, boom-and-bust cycles in the life sciences industry, and the democratization of medicine.
UST appointed Professor Kucherlapati and CEO Palaniappan as special-appointment professors effective Wednesday, enabling them to take a deeper role in teaching and support. The two launched their tenure with this Alpha Class session, delivering lectures over five days at UST Science Hall.
Throughout each lecture, the scholars sat alongside students, listening to one another's presentations and joining in discussions. The professors' thorough and thoughtful responses encouraged students to ask increasingly bold questions, generating lively debate.
Ko Eun-sol, a doctoral student at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) school who attended the lectures, said the experience was deeply meaningful. "It was incredibly valuable to hear the entire journey — from a core biotech idea all the way through drug development and commercialization — through the firsthand experiences of the world's leading scholars," she said. "Drawing on the insights I gained from this program, I plan to significantly accelerate my current research and actively think about how to apply it further."
Professor Kucherlapati said the diversity of students gathered from various national research institutes was what impressed him most. "Advances and innovation in science and technology truly begin when talented people from different backgrounds collaborate," he said. "I hope this class has broadened students' perspectives and given them a springboard to make their mark on the global stage."
UST President Kang Dae-im said he hopes the Global Alpha Class will give students the broad vision and insight they need to become future innovators. "Going forward, we will expand the program to other academic fields so that students can hear directly from the world's top scholars in each discipline and gain new insights," he said.
The UST Global Alpha Class is a new program designed to help students engage directly with the research insights and experiences of world-leading scholars, raising the breadth and caliber of their R&D work, while also fostering productive exchanges — including joint research, internships and mentoring — through ongoing interaction with those scholars.
