The Gyeonggi Province Office of Education held a policy briefing Monday at Anyang Arts Center to lay the groundwork for "Phone-Free School," the first major initiative of Superintendent An Min-seok.
The program aims to reduce smartphone use during school hours that is unrelated to learning, redirecting that time toward what officials call "RAS education" — a curriculum covering literature, arts and physical activity — to foster student learning, relationship-building and personal growth.
The briefing was organized to share the educational rationale and direction of the policy and build consensus among school communities for its implementation. About 250 people attended, including An, directors from the province's 25 district education offices, principals from schools in Anyang and Gwacheon, and parents.
"Phone-Free School is the starting point of an educational transformation — one that puts down smartphones and restores children's learning, relationships and growth," An said. "The healthy development of students requires cooperation among schools, families and local communities."
