Gwangjin-gu has launched a concerted push to prevent summer safety accidents and foster a construction environment free of serious workplace disasters.
The district held its "2026 Construction Site Safety Education" session Wednesday at the main auditorium on the fifth floor of the district office complex, drawing about 160 participants — contractors and supervisors from public and private construction sites across the district, as well as civil servants.
District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho attended in person and shook hands with each of the roughly 160 attendees, conveying words of appreciation and encouragement. The direct engagement with site personnel signaled the district's strong commitment to embedding a culture of safety.
The session was organized to raise awareness of construction site safety management — an issue of growing importance — and to help establish a self-directed occupational health and safety system at individual sites. Those in attendance represented contractors and supervisors from all 86 construction sites active in the district as of June — 84 under the architecture division and two under the residential projects division — along with relevant civil servants.
Ban Sang-gu, an instructor from the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, led a 90-minute lecture covering major risk factors and accident trends at construction sites, tailored safety guidelines, and essential knowledge on the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. The session gave participants a renewed appreciation for the importance of on-site safety management.
District Mayor Kim, who attended to encourage site personnel directly, said safety is "the top priority that cannot be traded for any other value." He added that "most accidents begin with a single moment of carelessness or inattention," and that the surest way to prevent serious disasters is to ask "could this be dangerous?" rather than assuming "it'll probably be fine."
Kim also called for thorough on-site management ahead of the summer heat, urging attendees to "make sure there is adequate shade and cold water at the site, and guarantee workers sufficient rest during the hottest hours of the day." He said the district would strengthen its safety monitor cooperative network and step up inspections of vulnerable construction sites, pledging to "put worker safety first regardless of the scale of the project."
