Headquarters and sites respond simultaneously when danger thresholds are detected

Lotte Engineering & Construction said Wednesday it has fully deployed a real-time heat-index IoT monitoring platform across 80 construction sites nationwide to prevent heat-related illness among workers during the peak summer season.

The company began developing the platform in-house in 2023 and completed it jointly with smart-solutions firm Envizsoft in 2025. Temperature and humidity sensors installed throughout each worksite measure conditions in real time, updating apparent temperature readings every five minutes so headquarters can track the risk level at each location.

Risk levels are divided into five tiers: safe (below 31 degrees Celsius), attention (31–33 degrees), caution (33–35 degrees), warning (35–38 degrees) and danger (38 degrees and above). When a threshold is breached, automatic alerts go in real time to the company's safety control center and its safety prevention and diagnosis team, enabling headquarters and the site to respond simultaneously — ordering rest breaks, halting work or taking other immediate safety measures.

On-site safety and health managers use the sensor data to automatically generate daily heat-index logs and send group safety text messages to workers tailored to the current heat-alert level. Workers can also scan QR codes posted around the site with their smartphones to check the current apparent temperature and the recommended response for each heat-alert tier, improving overall operational efficiency.

The platform earned Lotte Engineering & Construction an innovation award in the housing and complex category at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 2024 Smart Construction Challenge. A company official said the platform was developed and rolled out nationwide "to protect the lives and safety of workers on site from extreme heat," adding that the company "will continue to invest in new technology so workers can operate in a safer environment."

Lotte Engineering & Construction posted first-quarter sales of 1.6012 trillion won ($1.03 billion) and operating profit of 50.4 billion won.
