The National Nakdong River Biodiversity Institute announced Tuesday that it is accepting applications for an overnight educational program, the "Summer Vacation Biodiversity Camp," open to families with children aged 5 and older, including elementary school students.

Themed "Two Faces of Insects: Day and Night," the camp combines indoor education with daytime and nighttime outdoor ecological surveys. It is designed to help participants learn about insects living in diverse environments — near water, underground, and at different times of day — in an accessible and engaging way.

Participants will take part in a range of hands-on activities, including making mosquito repellent, observing aquatic insects, conducting light-trap collecting and examining ant colonies, to understand the ecology and habitats of living organisms.

The nighttime light-trap program is a particular highlight, allowing participants to observe moths, beetles and other insects drawn to artificial light.

The camp runs in two sessions — the first from Aug. 1 to 2 and the second from Aug. 22 to 23 — each lasting one night and two days. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through July 28, with up to 30 spots available per session.

The participation fee is 60,000 won ($39) per person, covering accommodation, breakfast and dinner. Full details and registration are available through the institute's integrated reservation system.

Yeo Jin-dong, head of the institute's exhibition and education division, said the institute would continue expanding hands-on educational programs to help the public understand and engage with biodiversity in an easy and enjoyable way.
