Home bathroom ventilation fan launched early this year
Combines dehumidification and warm air with enhanced exhaust and hygiene features
Growing consumer interest in bathrooms, once overlooked by the home appliance market
A home bathroom ventilation fan that LG Electronics launched earlier this year has quickly gained traction in the market, driven by strong consumer interest in hygiene management.
LG Electronics said Tuesday that the LG PuriCare BathAir System has recorded an average monthly sales growth rate of about 120 percent in the roughly six months since its launch.
The BathAir System is a bathroom appliance that combines dehumidification, warm air and body-drying functions. Enhanced exhaust performance and hygiene management are its defining features.
LG Electronics equipped the product with a "dual exhaust" system linking two exhaust fans, allowing moisture and odors to be removed more quickly. Conventional bathroom ventilation fans rely on a single-fan structure, which limits their ability to clear humidity and odors.
The product also features a "UV fan sterilization" function that automatically sanitizes the fan blades using UV-LED light, keeping the fan — which is prone to bacterial growth in humid conditions — hygienically maintained.
Conventional bathroom ventilation fans are fixed to the ceiling, making maintenance such as filter cleaning difficult. LG Electronics addressed this with a magnetic panel design that lets users detach and wash the unit with ease. The product also sends cleaning reminders when maintenance is due.
Bathrooms have long been considered a blind spot in the home appliance market, but consumer expectations for bathroom ventilation fans — once focused solely on ventilation and dehumidification — are rising to include hygiene management and ease of use, pushing the category toward greater sophistication.
A consumer survey LG Electronics conducted with Opensurvey in October last year found that dehumidification was the most important feature buyers consider when purchasing a bathroom ventilation fan, cited by 57.5 percent of respondents. Fast exhaust (43 percent), humidity sensors and automatic ventilation (42 percent), UV sterilization (33 percent) and warm air (32.5 percent) followed.
When asked what features they would want in future bathroom ventilation fans, respondents gave high marks to UV fan sterilization (86 percent), twice-as-fast exhaust (82.5 percent) and automatic airflow control (78 percent). The results point to growing consumer demand for products that circulate bathroom air more quickly while remaining easy to keep clean.
"We will bring LG Electronics' HVAC technology into the bathroom and set a new standard for the bathroom appliance market, so that customers can experience a premium bathroom they actually want to spend time in," said Chae Sang-cheol, a senior vice president overseeing Korea ES marketing at LG Electronics.
