Seoul Metropolitan Council approves investment consent motion, clearing the way for SH Urban Corp. relocation; mixed-use development including a 600-seat performance hall expected to boost cultural and employment infrastructure — Jungnang-gu to continue talks with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and SH Urban Corp. on expanding the project's scope for genuine balanced development
The relocation of Seoul Housing & Communities Corp. (SH Urban Corp.) headquarters to Sinnaedong in Jungnang-gu has entered full swing after the Seoul Metropolitan Council passed a consent motion authorizing the investment needed to carry out the move.
The relocation has been a flagship project for Jungnang-gu, pursued as part of Seoul's policy to achieve balanced development between the north and south of the Han River. On June 24, the Seoul Metropolitan Council approved the investment consent motion for the headquarters move, establishing the institutional groundwork for a mixed-use development in the Sinnaedong area that will include SH Urban Corp.'s office facilities, a 600-seat performance hall, and residential and commercial spaces.
The 600-seat performance hall is intended to fill a gap in Jungnang-gu's cultural infrastructure, serving as a central cultural hub where residents can enjoy a wide range of performances and arts events close to home.
The relocation is also expected to strengthen Jungnang-gu's urban competitiveness by drawing more foot traffic, revitalizing the local economy and creating jobs as a result of the public institution's arrival.
The project is set to proceed through the establishment of a real estate investment trust in July and a design competition in August, followed by basic and detailed design phases, with ground-breaking targeted for the second half of 2027 and completion slated for 2031.
Jungnang-gu District Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi called the relocation "an important turning point for Jungnang-gu to leap forward as a new growth hub in Seoul's northeastern corridor," adding that the district would work closely with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and SH Urban Corp. "to generate cultural and economic benefits that residents can feel firsthand — including through the 600-seat performance hall — and to ensure that genuine balanced development is achieved."
