The Bank of Korea announced Monday it has launched an open recruitment process, both internally and externally, to find the next head of its Economic Research Institute.

The institute director oversees in-depth research on monetary and financial systems, macroeconomics and the broader economy, as well as domestic and international research exchanges. The role is widely regarded as the central bank's intellectual nerve center.

The position also carries the title of chief economist, with responsibility for setting the direction and themes of medium- and long-term research.

The appointment will be made on a contract basis at the senior specialist grade. The contract runs for three years, with compensation determined based on the candidate's career background and the pay of existing staff.

Applications will be accepted through July 10, after which shortlisted candidates will proceed to interviews. The final selection is expected to be announced in September or later.

Current institute director Lee Jae-won will step down when his term expires in September. He is expected to return to his post as a professor in the Department of Economics at Seoul National University.
