Employees, university student volunteers take part in public-private housing project

Hyundai Engineering announced Monday that it had completed a home-repair volunteer campaign aimed at improving living conditions and energy efficiency for low-income residents in Seoul.

A total of 241 people took part in the effort, including 40 Hyundai Engineering employees, 164 university student volunteers and 37 skilled technicians.

After completing preparatory training and safety education, volunteers carried out four rounds of work from May 23 to June 27, installing wallpaper and flooring, replacing lighting fixtures, and repairing kitchen sinks and bathrooms at 40 low-income households across Seoul.

Hyundai Engineering has run home-repair volunteer programs for low-income households nationwide since 2023, guided by a corporate social responsibility philosophy centered on sharing the value of "space" and "energy" and supporting residents' self-sufficiency. In Seoul specifically, the company is carrying out the project for the second consecutive year, with this year's effort placing particular emphasis on improving residential energy efficiency.

The campaign was conducted as part of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's public-private residential improvement initiative, a project in which the city, private companies and nonprofits collaborate to upgrade living environments for vulnerable residents. Hyundai Engineering has participated since last year alongside Hamkke Utneun Sesang, a nonprofit specializing in residential environment improvement.

"It is especially meaningful that we can contribute to improving the quality of life for low-income residents while also helping reduce their actual living costs through better energy efficiency," a Hyundai Engineering official said. "We plan to consistently continue our social contribution activities with sincerity and sustainability in areas where we can apply our expertise."

Since launching its home-repair program in Gochang-gun in 2023, Hyundai Engineering has renovated a total of 146 aging homes nationwide, including projects in Dangjin in South Chungcheong Province and Naju in South Jeolla Province.
