Ecuador secure round of 32 berth with 4 points as Group E third-place finisher; South Korea must finish in top 8 among third-place sides to advance

Ecuador, on the brink of a group-stage exit, pulled off a stunning comeback victory over Germany to secure their place in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.

Ecuador defeated Germany 2-1 in their final Group E match at New York Stadium in New Jersey on Friday, completing a dramatic turnaround at the FIFA North, Central America and Caribbean World Cup.

The result left Ecuador with a group-stage record of one win, one draw and one loss — four points and a goal difference of zero — good enough for third place in Group E. As of Friday, Ecuador ranked first among all 12 third-place finishers across the tournament's groups.

South Korea, by contrast, finished Group A with one win and two losses — three points and a goal difference of minus-one — leaving them fifth in the race for the eight round-of-32 berths awarded to the best third-place finishers. South Korea must now watch results from other groups to see whether they advance.

Germany and Ecuador traded goals early in the first half. Just two minutes in, Leroy Sane received a pass from Florian Wirtz and fired a crisp left-footed shot into the bottom-left corner to give Germany the lead.

Ecuador leveled seven minutes later. Pedro Vite intercepted a ball from Felix Nmecha and played it to Nilson Angulo, who finished with a precise shot from outside the penalty area to make it 1-1.

With the match finely balanced, Ecuador completed the turnaround in the 77th minute. Kevin Rodriguez headed the ball from a corner kick into the path of Gonzalo Plata, who poked it past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer at close range to give Ecuador the lead.

In the other Group E match, played simultaneously at Philadelphia Stadium, Ivory Coast beat Curacao 2-0, with Nicolas Pepe scoring both goals.

Ivory Coast finished with two wins and one loss — six points and a goal difference of plus-two — level on points with Germany (goal difference plus-six). However, Ivory Coast were placed second in the group on head-to-head record, with Germany finishing first.

Germany, who had already clinched top spot in Group E before Friday's match, are among the potential round-of-32 opponents South Korea could face if they advance.

Curacao, making their World Cup debut at this tournament, had earlier produced their own upset by holding Ecuador to a 0-0 draw — aided by a brilliant performance from goalkeeper Eloy Room, who denied 28 shots, including 15 on target. They ultimately finished fourth and were eliminated.
