Working-level strategy meeting held at Korea Semiconductor Education Institute in Wonju
Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, which has been strengthening its semiconductor materials, parts and equipment industry, has decided to deepen coordination among key projects, including medical AI semiconductors and future-vehicle system semiconductors.
Industry, academia, research and government representatives from Gangwon Province's industrial economy sector held the 2026 Gangwon Semiconductor Testbed Working-Level Consultative Body meeting at the Korea Semiconductor Education Institute in Wonju on Wednesday to discuss the plan.
Beyond measures to strengthen links across various semiconductor-related fields, participants also agreed to build a framework in which education, demonstration and research functions work in close coordination.
The meeting included updates on each lead agency's project progress and future plans, along with discussions on improving testbed infrastructure utilization and generating synergies across projects.
Lead agencies from each project attended, including Gangwon Province, Wonju City, Gangwon Technopark, the Korea Testing Certification Institute (KTC), the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), Gangwon National University and Yonsei University's Mirae Campus.
Under the division of roles, Gangwon Technopark is responsible for establishing and operating the Korea Semiconductor Education Institute, building a semiconductor consumables demonstration center, and — as a new initiative — constructing a medical device semiconductor demonstration platform. KTC handles construction of a reliability verification center for future-vehicle system semiconductors.
KITECH is tasked with developing innovative technologies for semiconductor advanced ceramic materials, parts and processes, a new project currently open for applications; Gangwon National University will establish and operate a joint semiconductor research institute; and Yonsei University's Mirae Campus will build a training center for medical AI semiconductor specialists.
Participants examined collaboration potential around two new projects launched this year — the medical device semiconductor demonstration platform and the semiconductor advanced ceramic materials, parts and process innovation technology development project — and explored joint approaches to support companies and expand the industrial ecosystem.
Hwang Seong-hyeon, head of Gangwon Province's semiconductor industry division, said the consultative body meeting "will serve as an opportunity to further strengthen the linkage framework among semiconductor education, research and demonstration infrastructure." He added that the province would "organically pool the expertise and resources of each institution to enhance the utilization of the Gangwon semiconductor testbed, and will actively support the growth and vitalization of Gangwon's semiconductor industry by continuously expanding the foundation for corporate support and specialist training."
