Exterior renovation and landscape lighting to enhance nighttime scenery
The city of Gwangyang is overhauling the Gwangyang Seafood Retail Center, upgrading its facilities and adding new content in a bid to transform the struggling venue into a marine and fisheries-themed cultural destination.
Gwangyang city officials said Thursday that exterior repainting and landscape lighting installation have been under way since May to improve the center's image and draw more visitors.
Remodeling of the third and fourth floors is now complete, with an aqua cafe, a seafood bakery and a marine-themed coffee zone set to open June 27.
On that day, an outdoor busking event titled "Sunset Sea Busking at Gwangyang Seafood Retail Center" is scheduled at the third-floor outdoor hall from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
"Through the remodeling, the seafood retail center will expand from a facility focused on fish sales into a multi-purpose cultural space equipped with experiential, recreational and cultural functions," an official from the city's steel and port division said.
The Gwangyang Seafood Retail Center was built on a 6,303.5-square-meter site and stands four above-ground floors and one below-ground floor. The building houses restaurants and raw-fish eateries, but has been suffering from severe sales slumps.
