Korea Land and Housing Corp. (LH) announced Thursday that it has completed development of an AI-based earthwork design automation software to support building information modeling (BIM) design for residential complexes.
BIM is a technology that visualizes and automates key construction data in three dimensions across all phases of a project — from planning and design through construction and maintenance — to reduce errors and waste before they occur.
The new software applies reinforcement learning-based AI to earthwork design, a core element of complex development construction, to optimize and automate the calculation of planned site elevations and earthwork transport design.
LH said the technology is expected to cut earthwork transport volume by an average of about 7 percent compared with conventional methods. The software will be distributed free of charge to design firms participating in BIM design contracts commissioned by LH.
Ahead of the distribution, LH held a demonstration and feedback session at its Gyeonggi Southern Regional Headquarters on June 18, showcasing the software's functions and gathering opinions on expanding BIM adoption. About 50 people attended, including officials from public institutions and private design firms.
Meanwhile, LH developed a separate BIM design support automation software for residential complexes in July last year. That technology uses construction data embedded in 3D models to automatically calculate construction quantities and costs, and generates 3D models in conjunction with stormwater and sewage hydraulic calculations. It was also distributed to the private sector free of charge.
The latest development follows the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's push to promote smart construction, which has made BIM adoption mandatory across public construction projects.
"Following last year's two BIM design support software tools, we are now distributing this additional AI-based earthwork design automation software to the private sector, and we hope it will further accelerate BIM adoption," said Lee Sang-jo, head of LH's Smart Construction Safety Division. "We will continue to actively introduce smart technologies such as AI and BIM to lead the digital transformation of the construction industry."
