Singer Ben has spoken candidly about what led her to decide on divorce just six months after giving birth, and what life as a single mother has been like.

Appearing on the YouTube channel "Hyeongsuneun K.Will" on Wednesday, Ben said the divorce process was grueling from start to finish. "It wasn't just breaking up with someone — we had a child together, and I made that choice only six months after giving birth," she said.

Ben reflected on the years leading up to the split. "I say I carried it for five years, in effect. Since we weren't in a romantic relationship anymore, I felt I had to be careful. I tried holding back, I tried getting angry — I think I tried a lot of different things," she said.

She said the pregnancy had felt like a lifeline at her lowest point. "When I was going through such a hard time, I got pregnant, and I thought, 'This child has come to save me.' I believed that no matter what came my way, I would be happy now," she said. "But even in that moment, something happened. That feeling of betrayal was so hard to bear."

Ben said she wrestled with whether she was making the right call. "I thought about not separating, and I kept asking myself whether this was really the right choice," she said. "I imagined myself three years later, when my daughter would be six — would I be okay by then? I had a feeling I'd be thinking the exact same thing. So I told myself: if it's not right, end it quickly."

She also admitted that public perception was what frightened her most. "I had announced I was pregnant and said I'd come back after a safe delivery — and then I got divorced," Ben said. "I was terrified of how people would see me. I was shaking."

Ben said the decision was not one she took lightly. "Marriage is absolutely not something you can sustain on love alone, so it took real courage to make that choice," she said. "I have to be whole, I have to be happy, I have to be alive — and only then can my child thrive too."

Ben married in 2021 and had a daughter, but divorced in 2024. She is currently raising her daughter on her own while continuing her music career.
