Gangseo-gu holds cultural event for veterans' families, drawing about 300 attendees including national merit holders
Jin Kyo-hoon, the district mayor of Seoul's Gangseo-gu, expressed respect and gratitude for the dedication of national merit holders on Wednesday, saying the values and spirit of patriotic service must always be remembered.
Jin made the remarks at a cultural event for veterans' families held at Yewon Church in Deungchon-dong. "When it comes down to it, sacrificing yourself when the nation faces a crisis is never easy," he said.
He added that honoring veterans "is recognition of past sacrifice and dedication, but it also points toward a better future," and stressed that "the state, local governments and all citizens must honor the noble sacrifices made for the country."
Jin went on to say he was relieved to see attendees in good health and expressed deep gratitude for their presence. "I will do my best to strengthen the recognition given to national merit holders, addressing shortcomings one by one," he said.
The event opened with a janggu drum performance, then proceeded with a moment of silence for fallen patriots, a commendation ceremony for exemplary merit holders, and a luncheon and cultural performances.
About 300 people attended, including Jin, National Assembly lawmaker Jin Seong-jun, Kim Yong-baek, chairman of the Gangseo-gu Veterans Organizations Federation, and members of veterans' groups and their families.
The event was also supported by Woori Bank's Gangseo-gu District Office branch, led by branch manager Lee Gi-won, and more than 10 volunteers.
