Seongnaecheon Water Play Park, a beloved summer destination in Seoul's Songpa-gu, has opened its doors again this year.
Families no longer need to travel far to beat the heat — children can splash freely in a natural stream just minutes from home.
Songpa-gu opened the water park at Seongnaecheon in Ogeum-dong (141 Ogeum-dong) on Wednesday and will keep it running through Aug. 31.
Seongnaecheon Water Play Park first opened in 2004. Built around the stream's natural course, it offers a shaded, tree-lined setting where the sound of flowing water sets the mood for a summer escape. The park draws around 30,000 visitors each summer, making it one of Songpa-gu's most popular family outings.
Its biggest draw is simple: the whole family can spend a summer day in nature at no cost.
The waterway stretches 160 meters and ranges from 3 to 5 meters wide, winding in a jar-like shape that alternately narrows and opens. Water depths range from 30 to 80 centimeters, accommodating toddlers and older children alike. Amenities include a wall fountain, water slide, water balls and a rainbow arch, along with 20 shade canopies and 13 yurt-style tents for resting. Restrooms, showers and changing rooms are on site, and tubes, waterproof books and other water-play gear are available to borrow.
The park is open to all ages; infants and toddlers must be accompanied by a guardian. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with a mandatory 10-minute rest break after every 50 minutes of play. Admission is free.
The park uses only subway seepage water and groundwater. Staff clean the pools with high-pressure washers before and after each operating day, and the Songpa-gu Public Health Center conducts water-quality tests once a week.
Because the park is designed for children, pets, bicycles and kick scooters are not permitted. Six lifeguards and four maintenance staff are on duty at all times to handle emergencies, and operations will be adjusted in the event of a typhoon or heavy rain.
The opening ceremony on Wednesday drew about 250 children from local daycare centers and kindergartens, who enjoyed craft booths — making fans, hats and spinning tops — as well as a circus performance.
"Seongnaecheon Water Play Park has shared the summers of Songpa's children for more than 20 years, serving as a place of rest for the whole family," Songpa-gu District Mayor Seo Gang-seok said. "We will continue to create a variety of leisure spaces where residents can relax and enjoy their everyday lives with peace of mind."
