Mark, a former member of K-pop group NCT, has apologized after photos of him wearing clothing bearing the Confederate flag — a symbol of racism and white supremacy — spread online and drew widespread criticism.

Upper Room, Mark's solo agency, issued an apology Wednesday, saying it was "sincerely sorry to everyone who felt discomfort and disappointment" over the outfit. "We promise to act with greater responsibility, awareness and caution going forward," the agency said.

The Confederate flag dates to the American Civil War era, when it was flown by the pro-slavery Confederate states. It is widely regarded as a symbol of racism and white supremacy.

The backlash erupted among fans at home and abroad after photos of Mark wearing the garment circulated on online communities.

The agency said the item had been worn as a vintage piece, but that once staff recognized the historical significance and sensitivity of the symbol on the shirt, they took steps to conceal it. "Nevertheless, the image was shared externally, exposing the symbol and causing concern among the public," it said.

The agency also said it would tighten its clothing selection and content approval processes to prevent a recurrence.

The apology was published simultaneously in English, in consideration of global fandom opinion — particularly in North America, where the Confederate flag issue carries especially sharp sensitivity.

Mark left NCT in April after his exclusive contract with SM Entertainment expired and has since established Upper Room to pursue an independent career.
