Failure to wear safety equipment tops violation list over past three years; authorities call for compliance with basic safety rules
The West Sea Regional Coast Guard, led by Commissioner Baek Hak-seon, is urging water leisure participants to wear life jackets and follow basic safety rules as the peak summer season gets underway.
An analysis of Water Leisure Safety Act violations over the past three years found that failure to wear life jackets and other safety equipment accounted for the largest share of infractions, underscoring the critical role life jackets play in reducing casualties when accidents occur.
Under the Water Leisure Safety Act, all water leisure participants are required to wear life jackets and other safety equipment. Violations carry a fine of 100,000 won ($65).
Non-compliance cases continue to be recorded. In March, a water leisure participant operating a motorboat without a life jacket near the Ilja Breakwater at Gukdong Port in Yeosu was caught during a coast guard patrol.
Authorities also reminded participants to check weather forecasts and special weather advisories before departure, refrain from operating watercraft while under the influence of alcohol, file advance reports for activities more than 10 nautical miles offshore, and observe nighttime navigation restrictions.
The West Sea Regional Coast Guard plans to step up safety management and public outreach at major beaches and coastal waters ahead of the expected surge in summer visitors, while conducting on-site guidance and patrols to promote a broader safety culture.
"A life jacket is the simplest and most effective piece of life-saving equipment available," Commissioner Baek said. "We ask everyone to wear one during water leisure activities and to follow basic safety rules so they can enjoy a safe and happy summer."
