System weighs win type, weight-class sensitivity; dominant finishes score higher than decisions; human panel evaluations eliminated

UFC announced Tuesday it is introducing a new official ranking system called the Meta UFC Rankings.

The system represents a major overhaul of how fighters are evaluated, offering fans, athletes and media an objective, data-driven view of the competitive landscape.

UFC had previously relied on official rankings determined by a media panel of combat sports insiders and journalists. The Meta UFC Rankings departs from that model entirely, determining standings based solely on fight data.

UFC and its official fan technology partner Meta jointly developed the new methodology through close collaboration, aiming to create an objective and transparent fighter ranking system that both fans and athletes can understand and trust.

UFC President and CEO Dana White said he had long been dissatisfied with the old system. "We always believed there had to be a better way," he said. "We've always been a company that embraces technology and innovation, and now we've worked with Meta to integrate that directly into our rankings system. I'm excited to see how this innovation transforms the sport for both fans and fighters."

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he was pleased to be part of the effort. "I'm excited to work with Dana White and UFC to build a system that allows for much deeper analysis of fighter performance and contributes to more transparent and accurate rankings," he said.

The Meta UFC Rankings will be automatically calculated and updated after every official UFC event, with the first update set for June 30. The system combines statistical modeling and machine learning with UFC's deep domain expertise, evaluating a comprehensive set of objective metrics — including outcome probability, win type, fighter history and weight-class sensitivity.

Not all wins and losses are treated equally. Under the Meta UFC Rankings, defeating a higher-ranked opponent carries greater weight than beating a lower-ranked one. A dominant finish against a top-five contender is considered a stronger signal than a narrow decision victory over an unranked opponent.

The system also accounts for recent activity, giving greater weight to fights that took place more recently while applying an inactivity penalty to fighters who have been out of competition for extended periods. "By incorporating these advanced quantitative analytics, the Meta UFC Rankings provide the most consistent and transparent fighter evaluations of any ranking system currently available," UFC said.
