A 36,500-step challenge for healthy memories
Mapo-gu will hold the "2026 Hanmaeum Dementia Overcome Mapo Walking Event" from June 22 through 28 to raise awareness about dementia and foster a dementia-friendly community, the district said.
The district runs a year-round dementia care center equipped with various information and communications technology tools as part of its effort to build a dementia-free Mapo-gu. Last year, it also expanded early dementia screening to all neighborhood community centers across the district.
Organized by the Mapo-gu Dementia Care Center, the event is a virtual walking challenge designed to highlight the importance of dementia prevention and promote accurate public understanding of the condition.
Subtitled "a 36,500-step challenge for 365 days of healthy memories," the event invites all Mapo-gu residents to walk at least 36,500 steps over the course of the week. Participants can track their step count using "Sonmok Doctor 9988," the Seoul Metropolitan Government's mobile health management platform.
Those who reach the 36,500-step goal should take a screenshot of their step count on the app and submit it via a Naver form by July 5. Thirty participants will be selected by lottery to receive a 5,000-won (approximately $3.60) mobile gift voucher.
"Dementia is not an individual problem — it is a challenge the entire community must face together," a Mapo-gu official said. "We hope this walking event gives residents a meaningful opportunity to look after their health while reflecting on the importance of dementia prevention."
