A woman on Ulleungdo suffering from cardiac tamponade was airlifted to a hospital in Pohang after the North Gyeongsang Province fire department dispatched a helicopter to the island.
According to the North Gyeongsang Province fire department, a woman in her 70s visited Ulleung-gun Health Medical Center in Ulleung-eup on Saturday at around 5:30 p.m. Her condition — cardiac tamponade, a life-threatening buildup of fluid around the heart — required transfer to a major hospital on the mainland.
The fire department dispatched a helicopter, which arrived on Ulleungdo at around 6:31 p.m. that day. With the patient on board, the helicopter reached the Hyeongsan River floodplain in Pohang about one hour and 10 minutes later.
An ambulance waiting at the floodplain then transported the patient to a hospital in Pohang.
