Debuted in August 2016, marking their 10th anniversary this year

'Lovesick Girls' spent 55 weeks in the top 50 — a record

Chart longevity nearly double that of rival girl groups

"Blackpink in your area."

Four girls stepped onto the world stage with that declaration in August 2016. Few at the time expected them to spend the next decade reshaping the global pop landscape. But as Blackpink marks their 10th anniversary, they have done exactly that — coining a generational rallying cry and building one of music's most powerful brands.

Longevity champions: outlasting rival girl groups by a factor of two

Blackpink's impact on the K-pop industry over the past decade has been substantial. The group not only expanded K-pop's reach beyond East Asia into the United States and Europe but effectively rewrote the rules of the genre itself. Central to that legacy is their staying power — a chart longevity that has consistently defied the typical consumption cycle of K-pop releases.

According to Circle Chart, operated by the Korea Music Content Association, 20 of Blackpink's songs have entered the monthly digital chart's top 100 over the past 10 years.

The most frequent chart returnee was "As If It's Your Last," released in 2017, which appeared in the monthly top 100 on 16 separate occasions. "Lovesick Girls," released in 2020, followed with 15 appearances.

"Many of Blackpink's songs do not simply flash in the charts during their release month — they continue to chart consistently across multiple years," said Kim Jin-woo, a data journalist at Circle Chart.

The 10 Blackpink songs with the longest cumulative presence in the monthly top 400 are "Lovesick Girls," "How You Like That," "DDU-DU DDU-DU," "Pink Venom," "Shut Down," "Playing with Fire," "As If It's Your Last," "Forever Young," "Whistle" and "Boombayah." Those 10 tracks averaged 29 consecutive weeks — roughly 6.7 months — inside the top 50. A typical K-pop girl group's lead title track stays in the top 50 for an average of three to four months; Blackpink's songs last nearly twice as long.

"Lovesick Girls" in particular held inside the top 50 for 55 consecutive weeks, proving its exceptional staying power. The group also reached No. 1 on the monthly chart in the year each of the following songs was released: "Whistle" in 2016, "DDU-DU DDU-DU" in 2018 and "How You Like That" in 2020. Their best annual chart finish over the past decade came in 2018, when "DDU-DU DDU-DU" peaked at No. 5.

If digital chart longevity measures mainstream appeal, physical album sales gauge fandom cohesion and real purchasing power — and Blackpink's physical sales record has shattered the ceiling for female K-pop artists.

Looking at annual physical album sales, 2022 — the year their second studio album "Born Pink" was released — marked their highest yearly total. The album, counting Kit and LP versions combined, has sold a cumulative approximately 3 million copies, the highest total for any single Blackpink release.

Their third mini album "Deadline," released Feb. 27, upended the market again from the moment of its release.

Released to mark the group's 10th anniversary, the album signaled a bold musical evolution away from the formula long associated with YG Entertainment. The EDM-trap structure built around an instinctive climax hook and fierce girl-crush attitude — solidified under the sole production of Teddy — gave way in "Deadline" to an organic fusion with global pop trends.

While retaining "Blackpink in your area" as a symbolic sonic signature and brand marker, the group layered hardstyle techno, synth-pop and retro hip-hop over that foundation, pushing their sound to a new level of sophistication.

The album sold 1,287,614 copies on its release day according to the Hanteo Chart, becoming the first K-pop girl group release in history to surpass 1 million copies on day one. First-week sales reached 1,774,577 copies, surpassing aespa's "My World" — which had held the previous record at approximately 1.69 million copies — to claim the all-time first-week sales record among K-pop girl groups. By April, cumulative sales had reached 1,990,589 copies according to Circle Chart, underscoring the enduring commercial force of the Blackpink brand.

The third-best-selling Blackpink release is "THE ALBUM," their first full-length studio album, released in 2020, with 1,806,928 copies sold. It is followed by "KILL THIS LOVE" from 2019 at 855,873 copies and "SQUARE UP" at 628,617 copies.

A timeline of firsts and records for female K-pop artists

No account of Blackpink's global dominance is complete without their performance on the US Billboard charts and the UK Official Charts. A notable shift accompanied their rise on those charts: an increasing proportion of English-language lyrics.

"A sharp rise in the share of English lyrics is clearly visible from 2019 onward," Kim said. "This is an inevitable change that emerged as Blackpink synchronized with mainstream pop markets in North America and Europe, in step with their full-scale global activities."

Their second mini album "KILL THIS LOVE," released in 2019, debuted at No. 24 on the Billboard 200 — the group's first entry on that chart. Their first studio album "THE ALBUM" then reached No. 2 in 2020, setting their sights on the top spot.

That milestone arrived in 2022, when "Born Pink" reached No. 1 — a historic first for a K-pop girl group. It was also the first time any girl group worldwide had topped the Billboard album chart in 14 years, since 2008.

That achievement effectively dismantled the long-held K-pop industry assumption that boy groups were the ones who generated serious fandom revenue. "Deadline" has since debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200, giving the group five top-10 albums on that chart in total.

Their presence on the Hot 100 singles chart has been equally commanding. Starting with "DDU-DU DDU-DU" at No. 55 in 2018, the group followed with "Kiss and Make Up" with Dua Lipa at No. 93, "Ice Cream" with Selena Gomez at No. 13, "JUMP" at No. 28 in 2025 and "GO" at No. 63 in 2026.

Blackpink has now placed 11 songs on the Hot 100, setting a new all-time record for female K-pop artists. On the streaming-driven Billboard Global 200, "JUMP" debuted at No. 1 in its first week — the group's third global chart-topper.

Blackpink has also left an unmatched mark on the notoriously selective UK Official Charts. "Born Pink" reached No. 1 on the Official Albums Chart, a first for a K-pop girl group. "Deadline" entered at No. 11, giving the group four charting albums in total. On the Official Singles Chart, "JUMP" peaked at No. 18 and "GO" entered at No. 44, bringing their cumulative UK singles chart entries to 12.

450 billion won in revenue and a new era of all-stadium touring

The cohesion of Blackpink's global fandom has translated into staggering economic value through their stadium tours.

The "Born Pink World Tour," which ran from 2022 to 2023, drew about 1.81 million fans across 66 shows. According to Touring Data, a US-based concert box office tracking outlet, total box office revenue reached $331.8 million (approximately 450 billion won) — the highest world tour gross in the history of any female group, and the all-time No. 1 among Asian artists and vocal groups worldwide.

A single show at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Aug. 18, 2023 generated $11,429,130 in revenue — at the time the highest single-concert gross ever recorded for any group worldwide. BTS has since broken that record, averaging approximately $12.1 million per show (about 18.2 billion won) on their "Arirang" world tour.

The "Deadline" world tour of 2025 to 2026 conquered 33 landmark stadiums worldwide in six months — opening at Goyang Stadium in South Korea on July 5 last year, then moving through SoFi Stadium in the United States, Wembley Stadium in the United Kingdom and Stade de France in France, before closing at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong on Jan. 26.

Experts agree that Blackpink executed the two-track strategy — first securing a solid domestic fanbase, then combining it with global fandom firepower to target overseas markets simultaneously — more completely than any other artist.

"The foundation that allowed Blackpink to be recognized as a major artist in the global music market was built on the solid achievements they had already accumulated in the domestic market before 2020," Kim said. "Blackpink has set the standard for 'global K-pop' — one that erases the boundary between domestic and international charts." He added that Blackpink's records "will serve as an important milestone and benchmark for existing girl groups that debuted under their influence, and for next-generation K-pop groups yet to emerge, as they seek to establish themselves in the global market."
