Busan has designated the period through June 28 as "Drug Harm Prevention Week" to mark World Drug Day on June 26, announcing Monday a series of activities aimed at preventing drug misuse and raising public awareness.

The city plans to hold joint campaigns with relevant agencies to help residents recognize the dangers of drugs in everyday life, while also focusing on disseminating information about drug-related harm through academic forums.

A symposium titled "Community Drug Addiction Prevention and Intervention Strategies" will open the week's events Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the auditorium of the Busan Pharmacists Association. Presentations and discussions will cover practical approaches to drug addiction prevention in the Busan area, including sessions on "Sustainable Drug Prevention Education in Light of Overseas Cases" and "Therapeutic Community Programs for Addressing Drug Addiction."

On the afternoon of June 26, the city will hold a public awareness campaign inside Busan Station in partnership with district and county public health centers, the Busan Pharmacists Association and the Busan Anti-Drug Movement Headquarters. The event will feature anti-drug slogan chanting and distribution of promotional materials, and will provide guidance on improving public understanding of drug-related terminology, the treatment and protection system for drug addicts, and anonymous testing for drug exposure.

"Drug problems are a challenge our entire society must address together, not individuals alone," said Cho Gyu-yul, the city's director of public health. "We will work to heighten public vigilance through the prevention week and spread awareness of the dangers of drugs."
