A woman who stopped in the middle of a crosswalk to photograph a sunset and was struck by a turning vehicle has sparked debate online over pedestrian safety.
According to Chinese media outlets including China.com, the incident occurred June 8 at an intersection in Beijing, where a woman identified only as A stopped on a crosswalk to photograph the evening sunset with her mobile phone and was hit by a turning vehicle.
Footage from the scene shows A focused on taking pictures while paying no attention to her surroundings. Moments later, a car making a right turn struck her, and she collapsed onto the road. The driver stopped immediately, and she did not suffer serious injuries.
The incident set off a debate on Chinese social media over pedestrian safety awareness.
Online commenters offered a range of reactions. Some said stopping in the middle of a road to take a photo was inherently dangerous, while others argued that life matters more than a beautiful sunset. Several users said roads should not be treated like observation decks, while others maintained that pedestrians have the right of way on crosswalks.
