Residents unite to cheer on South Korea vs. Czech Republic — group viewing event for the Mexico match set for June 19
Jungnang-gu held a "2026 North and Central America World Cup Street Cheering Event" at Myeongmok Station Culture Plaza on June 12, bringing residents together to rally behind the South Korean national team.
Organized by the Jungnang-gu Sports Council, the event drew around 500 residents who watched South Korea's group-stage match against the Czech Republic and cheered on the team together.
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is the largest in the tournament's history. South Korea faced the Czech Republic in their opening Group A match, with residents following the action on a large LED screen installed at the plaza.
The event kicked off with participant entry and a first-come, first-served distribution of cheering supplies, followed by pre-match performances that energized the crowd. Residents of all ages gathered to enjoy the festivities, turning the occasion into a cross-generational celebration of community spirit.
The district took steps to ensure a safe and comfortable environment, providing guidance on heat illness prevention given the outdoor setting and stationing an ambulance and safety personnel on site for emergencies. Organizers also encouraged attendees to use public transportation and take their trash home, promoting an orderly and civic-minded cheering culture.
The district plans to keep the momentum going with another group viewing event on June 19, at 10 a.m. in the basement auditorium of the Jungnang-gu Office, where residents can watch South Korea take on Mexico in their next group-stage match.
"Many residents came together with one heart to cheer on the national team, and it was a truly meaningful time," District Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi said. "We will continue to invigorate our local community through a wide range of cultural and sports events where residents can enjoy themselves and connect with one another."
