Joint inspection with Seoul Metropolitan Government, Gwanak Police Station and Korea Transportation Safety Authority on Friday targets chronic noise complaints in Daehak-dong
Gwanak-gu, led by District Mayor Park Jun-hee, conducted a joint crackdown on motorcycle noise Friday on the road in front of the Daehak-dong community center, in cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Gwanak Police Station and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority.
The operation was prompted by a surge in delivery service use that has put more motorcycles on the road, generating persistent resident complaints about exhaust noise and illegally modified vehicles. Daehak-dong, where the crackdown took place, is particularly prone to such complaints — the area is a dense mix of single-room rental housing and commercial establishments with heavy delivery motorcycle traffic.
In response, the district formed a joint inspection team with the relevant agencies to protect residents' living environment and minimize noise-related disruptions.
The team checked whether motorcycles complied with permissible limits for exhaust and horn noise, and focused particularly on four types of violations: illegal removal of mufflers or noise covers, unauthorized addition of horns, illegal structural modifications (tuning), and obstruction of license plates.
Alongside this, the team enforced Road Traffic Act violations including reckless driving and aggressive riding, with a focus on securing resident safety.
In addition to enforcement, officers at the scene carried out public education activities — informing riders of the importance of noise reduction and encouraging voluntary compliance with traffic regulations.
Building on the crackdown, the district plans to publicize major violation cases and conduct additional inspections in the second half of the year, concentrating on areas with recurring noise complaints. It will maintain close cooperation with relevant agencies to consistently improve residents' living environment.
"Motorcycle noise is directly tied to residents' quality of life, and we will eradicate illegal behavior through ongoing inspections and guidance," District Mayor Park said. "We will continue to work actively with relevant agencies to do our utmost to create a comfortable living environment that residents can feel for themselves."
