Son Heung-min (34, LAFC) has declared "nothing is impossible" as he prepares for his fourth World Cup, with British pundits adding their voices in support — saying they want to see the South Korea captain lift a trophy.
On Wednesday, BBC Sport published a video examining the prospects of Asian teams at the World Cup under the question "Can an Asian team win the World Cup?" The segment featured an interview with Son conducted for the BBC Sport podcast "More Than The Score."
"Leading the team at this global tournament feels like a dream come true again," Son said. "The number of World Cups doesn't matter. It's simply every footballer's dream."
He added that representing his country "is always something special" and said he would not set limits on how far the team could go. "Nothing is impossible. We won't decide in advance where we stop," he said. "We have to keep pushing forward as much as we can. Of course it will take a lot of energy and sacrifice, but we will give everything for success."
Son made his World Cup debut at the 2014 Brazil tournament at age 22. The upcoming competition will be his fourth appearance, following the 2018 Russia and 2022 Qatar editions.
BBC pundits said they would "really love to see Son Heung-min lift a trophy."
They noted that he had not won as many trophies at club level as his talent deserved, while adding that South Korea is in the midst of a generational transition but currently has more players competing in European football than ever before.
South Korea, managed by Hong Myung-bo, opens its Group A campaign against the Czech Republic on Friday at 11 a.m. Korean Standard Time at Estadio Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico.
