Broadcaster Shin Jung-hwan has explained why he has stayed away from terrestrial television.

On Tuesday, Shin appeared on the YouTube channel "Cheoleomnun Jangsakkun," where he spoke about the possibility of returning to broadcast television and his current daily life.

The host asked why Shin had not returned to mainstream broadcasting and mentioned rumors that he had become wealthy.

In response, Shin said broadcasting was his calling and something he intended to do for the rest of his life. "Even without terrestrial programs, aren't there so many internet broadcasts and platforms these days? I plan to keep going on those for another 30 years," he said.

When the host pressed him on why he was not appearing on terrestrial television, Shin said it was not that he was avoiding it. "I have actually received offers three or four times. These are programs where you reveal your family and the ratings are huge," he said.

He added that once a family member's face becomes known through television, people will recognize them wherever they go.

"Looking at people who have appeared on family variety shows, they get to film commercials and receive congratulatory messages," Shin said. "But if you want to go out and live your life, it becomes very inconvenient. My family strongly opposed appearing on television. They told me that if I wanted to do it, I should do it alone."

Shin drew public controversy in 2010 after he was implicated in illegal overseas gambling in the Philippines. He compounded the backlash by falsely claiming he had been hospitalized with dengue fever to conceal the gambling. The scandal led him to suspend his entertainment career, and he returned to broadcasting in 2017.
