A man in his 30s who used AI to forge a police identification card and broke into a woman's home to rob her has been handed over to prosecutors.
The Jeju Western Police Station said Wednesday it had sent the suspect, identified only as A, to prosecutors on robbery charges after detaining him.
A is accused of stealing cash, jewelry and other valuables worth 3 million won (about $1,980) from a multi-unit residence in Yeon-dong, Jeju, at around 1:50 a.m. on May 27.
A forged a police ID using AI, then rang the victim's doorbell in the middle of the night and claimed to be an officer conducting a search and seizure. He had learned in advance that the victim was a woman living alone.
The victim grew suspicious and reported the incident to police that evening. Officers arrested A the following day, May 28, as he was attempting to flee.
Police investigated A's motive and the circumstances of the crime before referring the case to prosecutors.
