Samsung Heavy Industries said Wednesday it held a contract signing ceremony for the Delfin floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project in the United States.

The ceremony took place Tuesday in Washington, D.C., formally launching construction of the Delfin FLNG Unit 1 — a project valued at $2.9 billion (about 4.3 trillion won) that Samsung Heavy Industries disclosed June 2. The event also celebrated the completion of the final investment decision (FID) for the first-ever offshore FLNG project in US history.

The Delfin FLNG project is expected to serve as a catalyst for broader expansion of offshore FLNG development in the United States — a positive development for Samsung Heavy Industries, which holds an unrivaled competitive position in the global FLNG market. The company is already in negotiations with Delfin for contracts on Units 2 and 3, which the developer plans to pursue sequentially, and additional orders are considered likely.

Vice Chairman Choi Sung-an of Samsung Heavy Industries attended the signing ceremony, along with Dudley Poston, CEO of Delfin Midstream; Jason Kalisman, CEO of Talisman Group; James Burner of BlackRock Global Infrastructure Partners; Takeshi Hashimoto, chairman of MOL; and Carlos Wheelock, head of Vitol LNG Americas.

Government officials from both countries were also present, including Kyle Haustveit, assistant secretary at the US Department of Energy; Steve Carmel, administrator of the US Maritime Administration; and South Korean Ambassador to the United States Kang Kyung-wha.

"At the Delfin FLNG signing ceremony, world-class partners came together and showed their full confidence in Samsung Heavy Industries' FLNG technology and project execution capabilities," Vice Chairman Choi said. "We will prove our worth through the highest quality standards and strict adherence to delivery schedules."
