Pohang Mayor-elect Park Yong-seon on Monday conducted on-site inspections to strengthen the city's disaster response ahead of the summer season, targeting risks from heavy rainfall, typhoons and heat waves.

Park first visited the Chilseong Stream disaster recovery construction site, where crews have been reinforcing embankments and restoring the waterway following severe damage caused by Typhoon Hinnamnor. He received a briefing on the progress of those projects.

He then reviewed water-level management plans, advance evacuation procedures for residents, controls for high-risk sections and emergency duty schedules tied to weather alert levels. Park urged thorough site management to prevent additional damage — including sediment runoff and flow obstruction — in sections still under construction.

At the Changpo stormwater pump station improvement and recovery project site, Park examined construction progress, drainage facility operation plans and flood response systems for low-lying and residential areas.

He particularly checked whether drainage capacity and backup power supplies were sufficient to allow the facility to begin operation immediately during heavy downpours, and said the city must ensure preemptive test runs and emergency response systems are fully in place.

"Recent heavy rains can cause major damage in a very short time, which means prevention must come before recovery," Park said. "We must again review evacuation plans and on-site control systems for areas at risk of casualties so that not a single life is lost."

Park also visited two senior centers — the Keunseum Senior Center and the SK Corp View Prugio Senior Center — both designated as heat relief shelters, where he checked their operations and listened to elderly residents' concerns and suggestions for the summer.
