A man in his 40s who allegedly killed a supermarket owner in his 70s and fled with cash has been taken into custody.
Incheon's Michuhol Police Station detained the suspect, identified only as A, a man in his 40s of Chinese nationality, on Tuesday on charges of robbery and murder, according to Yonhap News Agency.
Incheon District Court Judge Park Young-gi, who oversees warrant reviews, conducted a pretrial detention hearing for A on Tuesday afternoon and issued the arrest warrant, citing a risk of flight.
A is accused of killing B, a man in his 70s who owned a supermarket in Dohwa-dong, Michuhol-gu, Incheon, at around 9 p.m. on Saturday and fleeing with 700,000 won ($453) in cash.
B was alone in the store at the time of the attack, investigators found. The supermarket was a small shop selling everyday household goods.
A was apprehended the following day and told police he had committed the crime to steal money, according to investigators. The stolen cash had already been spent in full.
'Aren't you sorry?' 'I apologize'
A appeared at Incheon District Court on Tuesday for the detention hearing.
After stepping out of a police van, A was bound with rope and handcuffed. He wore a hat and mask in an apparent effort to conceal his face.
When reporters asked whether he felt sorry for the victim, A replied, "I apologize."
He shook his head when asked whether he had planned the crime in advance, and said "No" when asked whether he had targeted an elderly person who was alone.
