A Chinese man in his 40s who allegedly killed a supermarket owner in Incheon and fled with cash apologized Tuesday as a court considered whether to detain him.
The suspect, identified only as A, arrived at the Incheon District Court on Tuesday afternoon for a pretrial detention hearing on charges of robbery and murder.
Wearing a hat and mask and bound with restraints and handcuffs, A told reporters "I'm sorry" when asked whether he felt remorse toward the victim. He also said the attack had not been premeditated and denied targeting the victim because he was an elderly man alone in the store.
The hearing began at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with a ruling on detention expected later that afternoon.
A is accused of beating to death a man in his 70s, identified as B, with a blunt object at a supermarket in Dohwa-dong, Michuhol-gu, Incheon, at around 9 p.m. on June 6, then stealing 700,000 won in cash before fleeing.
The store was a small shop selling everyday necessities. Investigators found that B had been alone at the time of the attack.
Police received a report that a person had collapsed inside the supermarket and launched a manhunt, arresting A the following day — Sunday — at a cafe in Seoul.
A told police during questioning that he had committed the crime for money.
