People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok on Friday called for a parliamentary investigation and a special prosecutor's probe into the National Election Commission's ballot shortage crisis, and urged the National Assembly to form a special committee to reform the electoral body.
Jang made the demands in a Facebook post, saying the party would "establish the truth and hold those responsible accountable without fail."
He said the Democratic Party would have no grounds to object, noting that Lee Jae Myung had himself ordered officials to "clearly identify the causes of the problem and hold those responsible firmly accountable." Jang went on to say he was "strongly demanding that a parliamentary investigation be conducted without delay and that a special prosecutor be pursued."
Jang also said National Election Commission Chairman Noh Tae-ak, the secretary-general and all commissioners must resign to take responsibility for the crisis, warning that the party would "immediately pursue impeachment" if they refused.
He said electoral commission reform "has gone beyond what can be left in its own hands" and strongly urged the National Assembly to establish a special committee dedicated to reforming the body.
Jang further warned that if the Democratic Party obstructed the investigation or reform efforts, it would be "confessing to being an accomplice of the NEC," adding that "the public's fury will consume Lee Jae Myung and the Democratic Party."
