City advances carbon neutrality, environmental regeneration, resource recycling and waterfront expansion through citizen-centered policies

Gimpo City is stepping up efforts to build the foundations of a future-oriented eco-city, advancing policies that span pollution prevention, carbon neutrality, environmental regeneration, resource recycling and waterfront development.

The city is expanding technology support and tailored consulting services to ease the environmental compliance burden on businesses, while accelerating a shift to greener transportation through the rollout of electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

This year, Gimpo is targeting the distribution of 1,982 electric vehicles and 66 hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles as part of its drive to improve air quality and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

In the Geomuldae-ri area of Daegot-myeon — a district long affected by environmental pollution — the city is pushing to develop a next-generation eco-friendly complex that combines environmental regeneration with industrial functions.

Gimpo is conducting related investigations and risk assessments, focusing on laying the groundwork for improved environmental health for residents and broader community revitalization.

Plans for an eco-friendly resource recovery center, designed to meet a forthcoming ban on direct landfilling of household waste, are also moving forward.

The center will serve as a wide-area waste processing facility with a daily capacity of 600 metric tons, jointly handling waste from Gimpo and parts of Goyang. It is targeted for completion in 2032.

Alongside this, the city is investing in waterfront environments that draw on the Han River estuary and marine resources.

Efforts include the designation of Daemyeong Port as a national fishing harbor, the removal of military fences along the Han River and Yeomha River, and the opening of Baengma Island to the public — all aimed at expanding accessible waterfront spaces for residents. The city is also pursuing community-oriented projects such as creating a pet-friendly riverside cultural space along Gamaji Stream.

Gimpo plans to build a sustainable urban environment grounded in a balance between conservation and development, with the goal of raising residents' quality of life and strengthening the environmental foundations it will leave to future generations.
