Center to open in October after interior fit-out; new Geodu General Industrial Complex expected to boost the area
The Geodu Industrial Complex Cultural Innovation Center, built at 1149 Geodu-ri, Naemyeon, Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, was completed Friday and is set to open in October after interior fit-out work is finished.
The center's completion coincides with plans to develop the Geodu General Industrial Complex directly across from it, raising expectations that the project will improve living conditions for workers and inject new energy into the local industrial base.
The Geodu General Industrial Complex will be built on roughly 550,000 square meters opposite the existing complex at a total project cost of 281.1 billion won (about $184 million), with completion targeted for 2032.
The new complex is planned as a key industrial hub to attract companies in advanced sectors such as biotech and AI.
According to Chuncheon city officials, the center was developed to improve the cultural and welfare environment for industrial complex workers and local residents. The two-story building has a total floor area of 989 square meters.
The first floor houses a lobby, fitness room, restaurant and cafe, and office space, while the second floor contains a large conference room, a smaller meeting room, and an outdoor event area.
As the competitiveness of industrial complexes is increasingly determined not only by corporate recruitment but also by workers' living conditions and quality of life, Chuncheon has been working to expand cultural and welfare infrastructure within its industrial zones. The new center will serve as a shared space for both workers and local residents.
Chuncheon plans to establish a contract management system based on input from the tenant company council and to run cultural and educational programs open to workers and citizens alike. The multipurpose space will also host performances, conferences, and computer education courses, among other programs.
The four-month gap between completion and opening is needed to finalize the management contract, complete interior construction, and install furniture and equipment.
Meanwhile, the Geodu General Industrial Complex has been advancing steadily through preliminary steps — it passed a preliminary feasibility study last August, cleared a board vote at the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation last December, and is now working through follow-up administrative procedures.
With the industrial land occupancy rate at existing local complexes standing at 98 percent, the new complex is expected to play a significant role in meeting corporate demand for space and expanding the region's industrial base.
