Kim Byong-sam won the Yeongcheon mayoral race in the 9th nationwide simultaneous local elections.
In his victory statement Thursday, Kim said he would "open a new future for Yeongcheon through integration and harmony, honoring the will of the citizens who hoped for a better Yeongcheon and chose change."
"This victory belongs to the citizens who dreamed of a better Yeongcheon and chose change," he said. "I will carry in my heart the urgent voices of the people I met on the campaign trail and Yeongcheon's boundless potential, and work with my eyes fixed solely on the citizens."
Kim said the election was now over and the time had come for all citizens to unite. "I will be the mayor of every citizen, not of any one side, and I will heal the wounds and divisions that arose during the election to build a Yeongcheon that stands together," he said.
"I am deeply grateful for the support and trust you have shown me," Kim said. "I will pour all my energy into a new leap forward for Yeongcheon, with an even greater sense of responsibility."
