A story about an uninvited acquaintance who showed up at a wedding and left a cash gift made up entirely of 1,000-won bills has gone viral online.

The account was posted recently on the online community Nate Pann under the title "The psychology of someone who pays a wedding gift in 1,000-won bills." The author, a woman in her 30s who identified herself as a newlywed, described the bewildering incident that unfolded on her wedding day.

According to the woman, identified only as A, the ceremony was held at a well-known convention center in Seoul, where the per-person meal cost alone approached 200,000 won (about $132). Because the venue was not large, she kept the guaranteed minimum headcount low and invited only close acquaintances she genuinely wanted there to celebrate with her.

For those left off the guest list, she personally visited each one, explained the situation, offered a small gift and asked for their understanding. All of them responded warmly and wished her well.

The trouble emerged after the ceremony, when A was sorting through the gift envelopes. She discovered that a man she had not invited — identified as B — had come to the venue entrance, handed over an envelope and left.

A said B was not a close friend; they moved in overlapping social circles and had exchanged greetings at occasional group gatherings, nothing more.

Her initial gratitude that he had made the trip quickly gave way to confusion when she opened the envelope. The 30,000-won gift consisted entirely of thirty 1,000-won bills.

"I'm genuinely grateful he came and thought of me, but I've never heard of anything like this and I'm completely thrown," she wrote. "I can't help feeling uneasy — I keep wondering if there was some meaning behind it. I'm not sure whether I should return the money."

Readers reacted with a range of opinions. Some said it was hard to imagine assembling exactly 30 bills by accident and suspected deliberate intent, while others suggested A keep her distance from B. Several commenters speculated it was a quiet act of revenge for being excluded from the guest list. Others were more charitable, saying B may simply have wanted to show goodwill without adding to the meal cost by not eating, or that the gesture, however unusual, was well-meaning.
