All 42 district-run senior centers to receive sanitation disinfection and air conditioner cleaning before peak summer
Filters and outdoor units on 103 AC systems to be serviced to boost cooling efficiency and improve indoor air quality
Gwangjin-gu is rolling out sanitation disinfection and air conditioner cleaning across all 42 of its district-run senior centers in preparation for the summer heat season, the district announced.
The project aims to raise hygiene standards at senior centers — facilities heavily used by older residents who are especially vulnerable to extreme heat — and create a safer, more comfortable leisure environment.
Working through a professional contractor, the district began sterilization, disinfection and pest control inside and outside all district-run senior centers on May 26, with work continuing through June 30.
Alongside this, crews are cleaning air conditioner filters and outdoor units to improve cooling performance and indoor air quality.
Of the 111 air conditioners installed across the senior centers, 103 units that have been in service for two or more years are included in the cleaning program. By type, those are 66 floor-standing units, 24 wall-mounted units and 13 ceiling-mounted units. Eight units newly installed this year through a green remodeling project are excluded.
Dust and mold can accumulate inside air conditioners over extended use, making regular maintenance essential. The district said professional cleaning will remove contaminants and boost cooling efficiency so seniors can use the centers in greater comfort.
In addition, the district plans to use the inspection results to identify broken or aging cooling equipment and carry out repairs or replacements as needed, ensuring no gaps in cooling service during the summer months.
"Senior centers are an important leisure space where older residents spend a great deal of their daily lives," Gwangjin-gu District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said. "We will continue to inspect senior center facilities and manage the environment with care so that seniors can use them safely and comfortably without worrying about the summer heat."
